The Gateway Hotel & Conference Center at Iowa State University is seeking a Hotel rOOMSSupervisor.

The Gateway is the largest, full-service hotel and conference center in Ames, Iowa, with 187 guest rooms, a three-meal restaurant, and 16,000 sq. ft. of banquet and meeting space.

The Hotel Rooms Supervisor is responsible for assisting the Hotel Rooms Manager and Assistant General Manager to ensure first class hospitality is consistently being delivered that exceeds guest expectations. Primary areas of focus are the hotel room's division departments consisting of Front Office, Housekeeping, Laundry, and Facilities.



  • Oversees daily shift operations of hotel room's division departments (front office, housekeeping, and Facilities).
  • Assist to recruit, hire, train, and develop departmental teams to ensure highest level of hospitality service.
  • Assist to develop and maintain employees work schedules according to business demands.
  • Review information daily in shift logs, group resumes, log books, diaries, and other pertinent information to plan, organize and execute a hospitality experience that exceeds guest expectations. .
  • Supervise employee productivity, performance, time, and attendance.
  • Creates an environment with engaged and satisfied employees.
  • Opens and closes departmental shifts, ensuring completion of assignments and other duties.
  • Assists and oversee supply inventories, and equipment.
  • Orders supplies and schedules repairs as needed.
  • Uses all available on the job training tools for employees; leads on-going training initiatives and conduct training when appropriate.
  • Maintains legal compliance, along with company policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Monitors and shares guest satisfaction and creates action plans to address systems and performance improvement.
  • Maintains the highest safety and security standards for hotel guests and employees.
  • Supervises Gateway's safety culture.
    • Promptly reports emergencies, accidents, injuries, missing articles, damage, engineering items and safety hazards to management.
    • Conducts supervisory accident investigations when needed.
    • Follows up with accident investigations and works proactively to ensure a safe work environment.

Front Office

  • Deploy and update rate strategy in reservation and hotel property management systems, to maximize RevPAR.
  • Effectively manage and control hotel room inventory.
  • Ensures accuracy of reservations, credit procedures, cash handling, and front office accounting.      
  • Supervise high call volume of incoming reservations.
  • Develops and implements strategies to achieve employee and guest satisfaction goals as measured by our comment cards and Internet feedback results.
  • Troubleshoots and investigate discrepancies to improve systems and individual performance.

Housekeeping & Laundry

  • Responsible to assist the daily supervision of the Housekeeping staff, property cleanliness, and hospitality that exceeds guest expectations.
  • Supervises cleaning and assists in inventories, ordering, and administration of Housekeeping services.
  • Knowledgeable and complaint with Gateway policies and procedures, hospitality and departmental standards.
  • Complies with federal, state and local regulations.
  • Follows up with accident reporting procedures.
  • Reports any deviations from policies, procedures, brand standards and regulations to management.
  • Ensure that the hotel and property are clean and maintained, to exceed guest expectations.
  • Schedules and assigns workload.
  • Inspect guest rooms, public areas, and property to ensure quality.
  • Complete and follow-up with projects assignments.


  • Inspects hotel property and guest rooms for problems and concerns.
  • Enters in maintenance work orders in to the hotel's property management system.
  • Follows up to ensure problems are being corrected.
  • Assist to complete inspection punch lists.


  • The ideal candidate must have or is working towards Bachelor's Degree or equivalent education/experience.
  • 1 to 2 years of work experience in a related position in the hospitality industry.
  • Supervisory experience of hotel front office, housekeeping, and/or maintenance experience preferred.
  • Must be able to work flexible shifts including holidays and weekends.
  • Experienced with hotel property and reservation management systems.
    • Agilysys, Visual One property management system, and iHotelier reservations systems.
  • Additional computer systems experience with TimeClock Plus, Microsoft Office applications, Word, Excel, and Outlook preferred.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to work independently, without direct supervision and supervise a cohesive team.
  • Ability to think clearly, analyze and resolve problems, while exercising good judgment.
  • Knowledgeable of federal, state and local laws governing equal employment opportunity and civil rights, occupational safety and health, wage and hour issues, and labor relations.
